The puppy blues is something which is not often talked about, but is very real for many new puppy owners!
As a puppy trainer, I get to speak to and work with new puppy owners every single day, and the puppy blues is one of the subjects which pops up frequently, but is also one of the lesser talked about topics.
So you've been planning on getting a puppy for such a long time.
You've done research into the breed which would suit your family perfectly, read all of the books, got all of your puppy equipment ready and found a good breeder.
You may have been able to visit puppy a couple of times before bringing them home, and even picked out a name.
And then the day finally arrives - puppy is home!
But then you start to panic.... things aren't quite going to plan!
Expectation vs reality is very different....
All of a sudden you feel overwhelmed that you are in charge of this tiny dog and just want to make sure everything is done in the right way from the start, but you didn't quite expect what was to come.
- Puppy isn't sleeping in the night
- You're exhausted
- The teething stage is difficult to deal with
- Toilet training routine feels non existent - puppy is going everywhere but outside/on the puppy pads
- Puppy doesn't seem to be settled through the day
- You feel like you're deep in information overload and don't know what advice is best to take
- You wonder if you've done the right thing and start to feel guilty because life isnt quite like what you expected
These are very normal feelings....
The puppy problems you experience are very normal too, and isn't a sign that you're doing a terrible job - in fact, the reason why you probably feel all of these feelings is because:
a) You care SOO much!
b) You have never been given a realistic idea of what having a puppy is actually like!
